Book Idea
- M: Richard III's wooing is more awesome than Romeo's.
- J: The only way Romeo could compete would be to kill Juliet to get to Paris. Which would be AWESOME.
Mississippi Goddamn • Skerik’s Syncopated Taint Septet
While at a listening rack at the Ballard Sonic Boom yesterday, checking out the new UNKLE album (excellent, btw), this Seattle combo’s CD caught my eye. And by “caught my eye” I mean their name tickled my, um, fancy. So I listened to a track, & there was more about them than the name to scratches my scrotum. Lively arrangement & a well-punctuating rhythm section. ‘Taint bad at all. Here is a Nina Simone cover.
Nobody Could Change Your Mind • The Generationals
This track begins with 15 seconds of everything I hate about Christmas. Then it gets really good—not by dropping those horrid bells but by riding them. It’s great & it grates.
This is not a painting, it’s a photograph of a real-life model dressed up as a painting via media.leeward.hawaii.edu

(1) Sequel suggestion: “Flipper vs. the Gipper: This Time It’s Personal.” (2) I love this use of adverb, “unwittingly”—how it clarifies that the mad scientist is well-intentioned (whew!) and how it suggests that it’s a complete accident and crazy random happenstance that he just happened upon training all the skills that a dolphin needs to kill the President. (3) Moral of the story: Obama should avoid circuses with trained bears riding unicycles.
Another issue to be addressed in the State of the Union: why is the United States so far behind other countries in its red wine drinking? (via www.datavisualization.ch)
In the Sun • She & Him
Hooray! A new She & Him track! Volume Two will come out March 23rd. It features Tilly and the Wall. (Via So This Is What the Volume Knob Is For.)
High fives may be pretty great, but High-Five’n White Guys are Awesome!

Lion in a Coma • Animal Collective
Lots of great tracks on Merriweather Post Pavillion—”My Girls” & “Summertime Clothes” are the singles, “Bluish” & “Brother Sport” are great—but I enjoy “Lion in a Coma” from that Australian-sounding thingy at the top to its weird 9/8 time signature (1&2&3&4&a) & the resulting syncopated melody in the chorus.
